Each year, the United Nations marks the celebration of World Youth Skills Day with a theme. This year, 2022, the theme is “Transforming Youth Skills for the future”.
The 15th of July, celebrated every year as the “World Youth Skills Day” presents an opportunity for young people to showcase their talents. World Youth Skills Day aims at celebrating the strategic importance of equipping young people or youths with skills for decent work, employment and entrepreneurship.
The world is embarking on a transition towards a sustainable model of development, thus it is crucial to encourage and motivate young people to build their skills to better incorporate them in their work life in the future.
One might question: how can we transform youth skills for the future? The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, says “Young people are drivers of change and must be fully engaged in decisions affecting their future”. Engaging youth in the learning process, allowing them to be creative, to explore their talents and giving them a chance to express it in practice is a better way to transform their skills for the future.
The Independent school is keen on nurturing and building the entrepreneurial skills of their students. However, the school does not only offer theoretical lessons in business studies or in arts but also allows their students to put the knowledge into practice. The World Youth Skills Day celebrated last Friday was an opportunity for some students to show their practical work through an exhibition organized by the school counselors and the peer educators club. Students from classes across primary to secondary and A-levels were invited to exhibit their art work, embroidery, carpentry and jewelry (bracelets and necklaces). Many students brought in work that was exhibited at the Union Vale campus.
Students from all classes came in to view the work of their peers. This year’s exhibition of students’ skills at the school is an indication of a generation of youths in Seychelles who will transform the future of the country with their innovative ideas and creativity.
