On Tuesday 15th October we had the pleasure of welcoming a team of professionals from the Ministry of Lands and Housing to have a careers talk to our S4 students. Despite their busy and hectic schedule DG Denis was able to gather a team including the CEO of SIA Mr Shah, Director for Survey Mr Alexis, Senior Database Administrator Mr Alcindor, Civil engineer Ms Farook, Architect Ms. Latulupe, technicians Ms Mein and Mr Hoareau and Hr officer Ms Vidot.
The students were given an oversight of the different departments within the Ministry and details about the type of work the officers undertake on a day to day basis; career opportunities in the Ministry as well as the pre requisites for different jobs and career choices. What did stand out for the students was that there is a great need specifically for trained surveyors as the department is curently made up predominantly of foreign professionals. The students were also impressed by the number of women working in male dominated positions like engineers and architects at the Ministry. Several students showed interest in joining the “Shadow” programme where they can get the opportunity to intern for one week at the Ministry and follow the work done by the experts.
The students managed to have one on one interaction with the officers and many were able to clear personal doubts and put forward their interests for the future. As if the session was not going well enough, the students were surprised by Minister Rangasamy who was extremely keen to join his team later on and engage with our students one on one.
Laika William an S42 student also the newly elected Head girl presented the Minister and his team with a certificate acknowledging the students and teachers gratitude to the team for having made the time to inform the students of all the interesting, fun and challenging opportunities within the Ministry of Lands and Housing.
This talk is the first of a number of talks that have been planned for the S4 group students as part of the class time activities by the S42 students and their teacher class teacher with the help of other teachers and support from Management.
